I love to turn education into contests and ways for kids to earn other things.  This way they associate achievement with learning from early on.  Reading is a great way to expand your kids mind.  Finding a way to increase the satisfaction they can get from reading is a great way to associate knowledge with power!
Mommy Moments with Abby's review of Mark-My-Time Digital Bookmark:  When kids are old enough to read on their own it is good to combine what they want to read with books that will help expand their minds as well.  Making this into a game is a great way to help them enjoy both.  I love the digital bookmark because it is easily turned into a game.  You can create a chart.  One column is for time spent on books they choose and the other for books that you choose.  When they get to the end of both columns by showing you the time they spend on the books with this bookmark they can get a prize.  Maybe they have to do something extra like write about their favorite book and highlight why that book was their favorite earning them a big activity like movie at the theater of their choice with snacks!  Offering this secondary prize for their work may just inspire them to read in a way where they are having to remember and think about the topics being presented.  Using a metric like the bookmark that you can start and stop to have both them and you look at as the chart is filled out allows for them to see where their time goes!  Then when they are done reading, they can use the bookmark to mark their page until next time!  Check out this product for your little reader.
